In cold weather, many people want to drink something hot, but this can be harmful to health, warned therapist A. Konykov.
According to the specialist, when the beverage temperature exceeds 65 °C, damage to the mucous membrane occurs, which can manifest as a temporary burn and discomfort, as well as microtraumas. If such exposure is repeated regularly, it can lead to chronic inflammation.
Moreover, the constant consumption of excessively hot beverages increases the risk of esophagitis — inflammation of the esophageal mucosa, which over time can provoke the development of more serious diseases, including malignant neoplasms.
Excessively hot liquids also often irritate the gastric mucosa and exacerbate the course of chronic gastritis or ulcers, the doctor noted. The optimal beverage temperature is considered to be no higher than 55 °C — in this case, it will not harm the mucosa.
Konykov advised against drinking tea or coffee immediately after brewing — it is better to wait about five minutes. It is also advisable to avoid scalding sips in the cold and to consider individual sensitivity.
