Expert Reveals Which Drinks Should Not Be Served with Sushi and Rolls

It's difficult to find an "accompaniment" for Japanese cuisine that won't irritate the stomach.

Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Titova warned that sushi and rolls do not pair well with carbonated drinks, including champagne, as well as with fatty or hard-to-digest dishes.

Incompatible Pleasure

According to the specialist, the combination of rice, fish, cream cheese, and sauces already creates a burden on digestion. Many popular options contain cream cheese, mayonnaise, fried tempura, and sweet unagi sauce. One standard "Philadelphia" roll can contain up to 500 kcal, while a whole set can exceed 1000.

When combined with carbonated drinks, even with mineral water, the stomach begins to actively produce bubbles of carbon dioxide. This leads to the stretching of the organ's walls and disrupts the normal motility of the digestive tract.

"As a result, the stomach can turn into a sluggish bag," the doctor explained.

In addition, carbonated drinks relax the sphincters — valves that regulate the release of enzymes, which can exacerbate pancreatitis.

Foods That Should Not Be Combined with Rolls

It is not recommended to combine Japanese dishes with other fatty products:

fried meat;
French fries;
chips.

Overdoing it with spicy wasabi sauce can also damage the stomach lining and cause burning or micro-injuries.
