How Harmful Is It to Drink While Eating? Expert Opinion

For many years, it has been believed that drinking during meals is harmful.

Endocrinologist and dietitian Oksana Mikhaleva emphasized that these concerns are not scientifically grounded.

Water does not "slow down" the digestion of food. Mikhaleva explained that there are chemoreceptors in the stomach that monitor acidity levels and stimulate acid production when necessary. The body regulates the process itself.

Moreover, liquid helps to evenly distribute food within the stomach, making it softer.

Does Drinking Water Stretch the Stomach

The common claim that drinking while eating stretches the stomach is also incorrect. Water cannot mechanically affect its walls, as it leaves the stomach within 10–15 minutes after eating.

Can You Drink Coffee and Tea During Lunch

There is a myth that tea and coffee interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals. In reality, Mikhaleva clarified, this only pertains to mineral supplements.

Tannins present in coffee and tea have little effect on vitamin absorption but can partially bind with certain minerals. Because of this, doctors recommend not combining hot beverages with dietary supplements—especially those containing iron, magnesium, zinc, or calcium. It is advisable to wait at least 2–4 hours between a cup of coffee and taking supplements.

However, during a regular meal, these beverages are completely safe.
