A trip across the Cable Bridge ended in a fire for one of the Riga drivers in the very center of the city. Noticing smoke from under the hood, the man managed to leave the vehicle and avoid serious consequences, but the car could not be saved.
The incident occurred on Wednesday near the Presidential Palace, reports the program Degpunktā (TV3).
The driver of a Peugeot was traveling on the Cable Bridge when he noticed smoke rising from the engine compartment. To avoid creating a dangerous situation on the bridge, he immediately switched to the right lane and exited onto Pils laukums. There, the car came to a complete stop.
At first, the man tried to extinguish the fire himself using a fire extinguisher that was in the car. However, he was unable to put out the flames. According to the driver, the source of the fire was in the engine compartment, and it was impossible to open the hood.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene extinguished the fire and prevented its spread. Preliminary information suggests that the cause of the fire could have been a rupture in the cooling system hose. This is the version that the driver himself mentioned, according to rescuers.
The State Fire and Rescue Service reminds that in the event of a fire under the hood, one should not open it unnecessarily. A sudden influx of oxygen can lead to a rapid spread of the fire and create an additional threat to individuals.
Despite the serious damage to the vehicle, the incident resulted in no injuries. Neither the driver nor any passersby were harmed.
Such fires in the engine compartment most often occur due to technical malfunctions, leaks of technical fluids, or damage to elements of the cooling system.
In this case, the quick reaction of the driver played a decisive role, as he immediately stopped and exited the vehicle. The car could not be saved, but the main thing is that no one was injured.
