British police have reported a breakthrough in the investigation of one of the most high-profile incidents in recent years. Nine years after an unknown runner pushed a woman under the wheels of a double-decker bus on Putney Bridge in London, a 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of committing the crime.

Nine years after the incident on Putney Bridge in London, which British media dubbed the "Putney Pusher" case, investigators have identified a new suspect, reports rmf24.

According to the Metropolitan Police, a 44-year-old man was arrested on June 15 on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.

According to the Daily Mail, the arrested individual is a wealthy millionaire banker. He was apprehended in west London at a house valued at around £1.4 million. The publication also claims that the man has connections to the British royal family, previously served in the military, and was awarded for his participation in overseas missions.

Woman Miraculously Escaped Death

The incident occurred on the morning of May 5, 2017. A man jogging on Putney Bridge unexpectedly pushed a woman walking on the sidewalk directly into the path of an approaching double-decker bus.

The 33-year-old woman fell onto the road and miraculously survived. The bus driver managed to swerve sharply and avoid hitting her.

"Her head was just a few centimeters from the bus," the driver later recalled.

According to him, the incident still haunts him.

"I constantly think about this case when I drive over that bridge several times a day. I pay close attention to pedestrians on the sidewalk. I wouldn't say it haunts me, but I can't easily forget it."

He added:

"I’m glad I reacted quickly that day because otherwise, it would have ended very differently—for both me and the woman who was pushed. Her head was just a few centimeters from the bus, even after I swerved sharply to avoid a collision."

The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras. The footage also shows that a few minutes after the incident, the runner returned to the scene.

Investigation Lasted Nearly Ten Years

Immediately after the attack, the police interviewed around 50 people. Three suspects were detained, including an American investment banker, but it later emerged that he was in the U.S. on the day of the incident. As a result, no charges were brought against anyone.

In 2018, the investigation effectively stalled and was closed.

Now, nine years after the incident, investigators are reporting a new breakthrough in the case. Details that led to the identification of the suspect have not yet been disclosed.

A story that has remained one of the most mysterious in British criminal history for many years may finally reach a conclusion. If the guilt of the arrested individual is proven, he will face charges for a crime that nearly cost the life of an innocent passerby and remained unsolved for many years.
