In Peru, police conducted an unconventional operation to detain a suspect in drug trafficking, using costumes of the mascots for the 2026 World Cup.
According to local media, 48-year-old Lima resident Carlos Cabrera was under investigation for suspected drug dealing. Law enforcement officials discovered that the man is a passionate football fan and would be at home during an important broadcast related to the World Cup.
To avoid raising suspicions, the police dressed in life-sized costumes of the tournament's official mascots — the moose Maple and the bald eagle Clutch. In this unusual guise, they approached the suspect's house and suddenly initiated the operation.
According to the police, the door to the residence was forced open, and the man was detained without serious resistance.
During the search, law enforcement officers found more than 2,500 packets of narcotics, as well as firearms. The seized materials have been sent for examination.
The police noted that using unusual methods of disguise helps catch suspects off guard and avoid possible resistance during the arrest.
The unusual operation quickly attracted public and media attention. The authorities of Peru stated that they will continue to use unconventional tactical methods in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.
