New details have emerged in the high-profile incident in Poland, where the remains of 32 unborn children were discovered during construction work.
In Poland, the investigation into the high-profile case related to the discovery of the remains of 32 unborn children on a site designated for residential development continues. The find was made during earthworks in the village of Lutoryż near Rzeszów.
According to Wyborcza, the remains were discovered by an excavator operator while preparing the area for the construction of residential houses. Following this, work was immediately halted, and police and prosecutor's office officials arrived at the scene.
During the inspection of the area, investigators found the remains of 32 fetuses buried at various depths. For the establishment of all circumstances, forensic examinations were appointed.
A 57-year-old resident of Rzeszów, who works as a pathologist, has been detained in connection with the case. According to the investigation, the woman may have transported stillborn fetuses from the hospital during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to unofficial information, during the interrogation, she stated that she used the biological material for medical research. She claimed that after completing her work, the remains were placed in jute bags and buried on her property, where there was an empty house at the time.
It is reported that during the period of the alleged events, the woman worked at Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszów. The management of the medical institution has stated its willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
Currently, the suspect faces charges of desecration of the deceased's bodies and improper handling of medical materials. Under Polish law, for the most serious of the charges, she could face up to 12 years in prison.
The prosecutor's office is also investigating how the biological material ended up outside the medical institution, whether storage and disposal procedures were followed, and whether the hospital management was aware of the possible removal of the remains.
The investigation is ongoing. Investigators need to establish the origin of all the discovered remains and determine whether the suspect acted alone or if other individuals may have been involved.
