In Riga, a Mercedes car crashed into the window of a furniture store on Katlakalna Street. According to preliminary information, the driver felt unwell while driving, and serious consequences were avoided only due to a fortunate turn of events.
Visitors and employees of the furniture store on Katlakalna Street witnessed an unusual incident on Friday. A Mercedes car unexpectedly veered off the road and crashed into the storefront, shattering two large windows.
Shards scattered across the sidewalk and inside the store. At the time of the accident, there were customers inside, but none were injured.
One of the store employees said he was serving a customer when he heard a loud bang.
"I turned around and saw that the car had crashed into the window. The driver probably felt unwell. Fortunately, there were no children or other visitors nearby. We immediately approached the female driver, turned off the engine, and called an ambulance," said the store consultant Raivis in an interview for the show Degpunktā (TV3).
According to him, the woman was in a state of severe stress and could not explain what had happened. Employees and witnesses tried to calm her down until the medics arrived.
The State Police reported that the most likely cause of the accident was health problems experienced by the driver. Her condition is currently being assessed by specialists.
Despite the severely damaged storefront, the car itself sustained only minor damage. The vehicle stopped just a few centimeters from the furniture displayed in the showroom.
Circumstances were equally fortunate for the owner of the parked Škoda nearby. If the Mercedes had shifted slightly to the right, a collision would have been unavoidable.
The store has already begun to address the aftermath of the incident. After cleaning up the broken glass, the retail outlet will continue to operate as usual, and plans are in place to restore the damaged storefront.
This incident serves as a reminder that a sudden deterioration in health while driving can lead to an accident even in the absence of traffic violations.
