A resident of Olaine extinguished a fire that had started in her apartment, but the smoke had already spread through the stairwell. Fortunately, serious consequences were avoided, but the incident once again highlighted how dangerous smoking after consuming alcohol can be.
Around three o'clock in the afternoon, residents of an apartment building in Olaine smelled strong smoke and called the firefighters. The source of the smoke was located in one of the apartments of the two-story building.
When the firefighters arrived and knocked on the door, the owner of the apartment had already managed to extinguish the fire herself. However, the smoke spread so much that it was felt by neighbors throughout the stairwell.
The woman herself does not hide that the cause of the incident was alcohol and carelessness.
According to her, the day before, she had drunk almost a bottle of vodka, after which she decided to smoke in the bathroom. The cigarette butt ended up on a cloth left in the bathtub, and after some time, the fabric began to smolder.
“ I drank almost a whole bottle of vodka and lay down. Then I felt the smoke. I extinguished the fire myself,” she told journalists from Degpunktā (TV3).
The woman claims that she usually does not smoke and that the incident was a matter of circumstance. After the fire was extinguished, rescuers and medics still arrived on the scene.
Doctors examined the apartment owner to ensure that she had not suffered from smoke inhalation. According to her, there was no threat to her life.
Neighbors reported that similar incidents had not occurred in the building before. One resident noted that she has lived here for two years and that the area had been considered calm until now.
The fire did not cause serious damage. The main consequences were limited to smoke in the premises and traces from the fire extinguisher, the powder from which the apartment owners will now have to clean up.
According to rescuers, unextinguished cigarette butts remain one of the most frequent causes of domestic fires, especially if a person is in a state of alcohol intoxication.
This time, there were no injuries, but the incident in Olaine shows how one act of carelessness can threaten an entire apartment building.
