The newly appointed Minister of the Interior Janis Dombrova decided that the police need not only a whip but also a carrot. And he descended to praise.
"This morning in the Augšdaugava region, a patrol of the State Police consisting of two officers detained 34 (!) illegal migrants — citizens of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Well done! Great job," he wrote on his Facebook.
However, is it a reasonable step to go against 34, especially considering their countries of origin? What if they had taken away their service weapons? Many commentators are asking how they even ended up on this side of the border?
Ainars Pudulis: Who and how much money received for these illegal immigrants to end up in Latvia? Have the coordinators of this 'corridor' already been arrested? Only then can the job be considered fully completed.
