Relatives of 35-year-old Vadim, who was killed in late May in Baloži, do not understand why the suspect in the crime is still at large. According to them, the lack of public explanations from the court only heightens suspicions about possible connections between the accused and law enforcement officials.
On the morning of May 28, it became known about the death of a man in one of the private houses in Baloži. According to the investigation, during a gathering, a conflict arose between two men, which ended in a fatal stabbing. The main suspect is 42-year-old homeowner Dmitry, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
Despite the police's petition to detain the man, the court refused to apply arrest as a preventive measure.
"Indeed, our judge refused to apply a preventive measure, but we cannot disclose the reasons as this information is restricted by law," said the assistant to the chairman of the Riga District Court, Anastasia Dub.
Relatives of the deceased claim that they have not yet received answers to many questions. Additional confusion was caused by the fact that some of Vadim's belongings, according to them, remained with the suspect after the tragedy.
"The investigator said he would call Dmitry or his mother, they would look for the belongings, and then we could come and pick them up," said the deceased's friend Edgar.
The man tried to find out the circumstances of the incident on his own and spoke with neighbors. According to him, residents of the area are also discussing the release of the suspect.
"Dad was some kind of police chief, with some awards," Edgar stated, adding that he does not understand the reasons for the court's decision.
According to him, there have long been rumors among the deceased's acquaintances about the suspect's possible involvement in drug trafficking.
"If he was involved in large-scale drug trafficking, you can't just do that — you either have to pay the police or have connections," Edgar believes.
The State Police do not disclose details of the investigation. The law enforcement agencies also do not comment on the assumptions regarding the suspect's possible connection to the drug business and do not state whether the court's decision to refuse arrest will be appealed.
The investigation of the criminal case continues. No official charges have yet been filed in the case, and the suspect's guilt has not been established by the court.
