The morning for a resident of the Ogre region ended in an accident even before heading to Riga. At the traffic light, his car was hit by a female driver who, according to preliminary reports, did not notice either the red signal or the stationary car ahead due to the bright sun.

A serious accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Ogre near a pedestrian crossing. A Nissan car crashed into a stationary Audi at a red traffic light.

After the impact, shattered glass was scattered on the road, and the Audi had its rear window completely smashed.

The driver of the Audi, Elmar, stated that he was heading towards Riga and stopped at the stop line when the red light came on. According to him, the female driver of the car behind later explained that she was blinded by the sun.

"Supposedly the sun was shining on the traffic light, and she didn’t notice that I was standing in front," Elmar said in the show Degpunktā (TV3).

He recalls realizing that there was no way to avoid the collision.

"I could already see that she was coming and wouldn’t stop — there would be a hit," the driver said.

The force of the collision was significant — the Audi was pushed forward about 20 meters. According to Elmar, this may indicate that the Nissan driver hardly braked before the impact.

What particularly frightens him is the thought that shortly before the accident, he had dropped off his children at kindergarten.

"Considering the serious damage to the car, it’s lucky that there was no one in the back seat," he noted.

After the accident, the Nissan driver was in shock but managed to fill out the necessary documents. Later, the woman was sent to the hospital for examination.

A tow truck took the damaged Nissan away from the scene. The Audi remained on the roadside until the owner arrived, and the police attached a warning tape to the car so that passersby would not mistake it for an abandoned vehicle.

The incident in Ogre once again reminded how dangerous bright sunlight can be for drivers — especially in the morning and evening when the light falls at a low angle and worsens the visibility of traffic lights, pedestrians, and stationary cars.
