On Tuesday in the Augšdaugava region, a Latvian citizen was detained for the second time within a year for transporting illegal migrants, reported LETA, citing Jolanta Babishko, a representative of the State Border Guard (SBG).

In the Tabor parish, border guards attempted to stop a "Nissan" vehicle for inspection; however, its driver did not comply with the demands and continued driving.

The border guards began a pursuit, during which they saw the driver drop off several individuals from the car before stopping the vehicle.

During the search operations, the border guards discovered five individuals of Asian descent near the drop-off location without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits, who had previously illegally crossed the Belarusian-Latvian border.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the transporter. This is already the second such crime committed by him within a year. On July 23, 2025, border guards, in cooperation with officers from the State Police and municipal police, detained him in the Bauska region. At that time, the driver also did not comply with the order to stop and, sharply increasing speed, attempted to escape but drove off the road into a ditch.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the driver. Initially, he was subjected to a preventive measure in the form of detention, but at the time of committing the second crime, a preventive measure in the form of bail was in effect.
