Currently, a strong northwestern wind is blowing in Latvia. According to meteorologists, in several areas, gusts reach 70 km/h, and in some places, the wind is already toppling trees and damaging infrastructure. Particularly strong winds are observed in Riga, the Riga region, and Latgale.

On Wednesday, by 7:00 PM, the single emergency number 112 had already received 111 reports about the consequences of the strong wind, the State Fire and Rescue Service reported.

In most cases, the wind has knocked trees onto the roadway. In four cases in Riga, trees fell onto vehicles. In one case in Riga, a tree tore part of the roof off a residential building. In Preili, a tree fell on a car and a residential house.

The most calls — 34 — were received in Riga, with another 29 in the Riga region. In Latgale, 27 calls were registered due to the consequences of the wind.

Eyewitnesses report that in Old Riga, at the entrance to the Bank of Latvia building, a tree fell. Its branches and part of the trunk ended up on the sidewalk, and the scene has been cordoned off with warning tape. No state bankers were injured.

Meanwhile, in Tornakalns on Altonavas Street, the wind knocked down a birch tree on Wednesday evening, blocking traffic.
