In Purvciems, at the intersection of Dzelzavas and Nitzgales streets, a BMW and a motorcycle collided. The motorcyclist was injured and taken to the hospital, and the circumstances of the accident are now to be clarified by the police.
A serious accident involving a motorcycle occurred in Riga before the evening rush hour. At the intersection of Dzelzavas and Nitzgales streets, a BMW and a motorcycle collided.
After the impact, both vehicles remained at the intersection: the front of the car was severely damaged, and the motorcycle lay on its side among scattered plastic parts.
The motorcyclist was the most seriously injured. The man was thrown forward after the collision but remained conscious and spoke with bystanders until medical personnel arrived.
The BMW driver, Elena, stated that she was making a left turn on a green traffic light and initially did not notice the oncoming motorcycle.
According to her, when she began the maneuver, the intersection appeared empty, and the motorcyclist, as she perceived, was moving at a very high speed.
“‘He just crashed into my car,’” the woman said in an interview for the show Degpunktā (TV3).
She also reported that she tried to help the injured man and immediately called for an ambulance.
The motorcyclist's wife also arrived at the scene of the accident. According to her, the man has been riding a motorcycle for several years, and the bike itself was purchased very recently.
She specifically emphasized the importance of full gear for motorcyclists, noting that protection helps avoid fatal consequences in accidents.
Importantly, such collisions are particularly common during left turns at intersections when the driver of the car is required to yield to oncoming traffic going straight. Even a slight increase in the motorcycle's speed can sharply reduce the reaction time for other road users.
The injured man's wife also noted that this intersection has long been considered difficult and tense for making left turns due to the short gap for a safe maneuver.
Medical personnel transported the motorcyclist to the hospital in a moderate condition. According to the latest information, his condition remains stable.
The circumstances of the accident are now to be established by the police.
