The sun combined with heavy traffic caused one driver on Katlakalna Street in Riga to crash into a metal pole. The impact damaged both the car and the streetlight pole. No other people were injured in the incident.

Rescue workers were cutting down a streetlight pole that had been leaning across the roadway for about an hour. A BMW had crashed into it and was already towed to the side of the road. The moment of the accident was captured by surveillance cameras from a business located on the opposite side of the street, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).

"I didn’t notice the pole and crashed into it hard... The impact was strong." (DP: Did you go straight and just hit it?) Yes, I pressed the gas and it felt like I 'climbed' the pole," said a man who works in the area.

The driver of the car was not injured in the accident. He explained that after the collision, he didn’t understand what had happened because he didn’t see the pole either at the beginning of the maneuver or after he had already crashed into it.

"In the mornings, there is heavy traffic here — you have to look both ways. And the sun is in your eyes... You turn and just don’t notice. I was turning left towards Lubanas Street. (DP: Is this your usual route?) No, I usually go towards Krustpils Street and then over the Southern Bridge home. This time I needed to stop by Purvciems to see a relative, and it turned out unfortunate," said the driver.

The car, which has belonged to the man for five years, he plans to repair in order to get it back on the road.
