On Friday, several wagons carrying gravel derailed at the Gudžiai station in the Kėdainiai district of Lithuania, and cleanup efforts continued throughout the night.
Meanwhile, the second railway track is severely damaged and will require major repairs. The accident affected the movement of 18 passenger trains, which were expected to carry about 3,000 passengers.
It is reported that train services have been restored, but delays are possible.
"At the scene in Gudžiai, where freight wagons carrying gravel derailed, the main work to eliminate the accident has already been completed, and the movement of passenger and freight trains has been restored," said Sandra Trinkūnaitė-Rimkienė, the public relations manager of the group "Lietuvos geležinkeliai" (Lithuanian Railways), on LRT radio on Saturday morning.
However, due to ongoing work, train delays are possible. According to the representative, delays may reach up to half an hour.
Due to the incident, train services on the Vilnius–Riga–Valga, Vilnius–Klaipeda–Vilnius, Vilnius–Šiauliai–Vilnius, and Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas routes were disrupted.
Buses were ordered for passenger transport, and ticket sales were also suspended.
