On Friday evening around 10 PM, the State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia (SFRS) received a call to Stopini parish, where a pile of waste was burning over an area of 2000 square meters, a wall of a hangar over an area of 200 square meters, mobile modules over an area of 10 square meters, and a construction waste shredder.
The fire broke out at the sorting and processing center for construction waste "Nomales" of the construction and industrial waste disposal company "CleanR Verso" in Rumbula, on Brivnieku Street, confirmed the chairman of the board, Eriks Gusevs.
Representatives of the company reported that unsorted construction waste caught fire, but no hazardous waste was burning, as there is none at "Nomales." The State Environmental Service was nevertheless informed about the situation.
The combustion caused heavy smoke that could be seen and felt in the extensive surroundings, prompting local residents during the night to refrain from opening windows and to take other precautions.
During the firefighting efforts, one firefighter was injured and was handed over to the medical staff of the Emergency Medical Service. The company reported during the night that there were no casualties on its side in the incident.
Less than three hours after the call, this high-risk fire was localized, but firefighting efforts continue.
