In Rezekne, a driver of an Audi A6, while in a state of severe alcohol intoxication, attempted to avoid responsibility by offering a bribe to police officers. The incident occurred this week on Brieza Street, reports the portal "Our Rezekne."
Law enforcement officials noticed an Audi A6 due to its suspicious driving style. The manner of operating the vehicle raised doubts among the police about the driver's adequate condition, after which a decision was made to stop the car for inspection.
Behind the wheel was a man born in 1982. During the conversation with him, the police officers noticed clear signs of possible alcohol intoxication. A conducted test confirmed their suspicions — the alcohol concentration in the exhaled air was 2.71 promille, which significantly exceeds the permissible limit and is considered a severe degree of intoxication.
While in the police service vehicle, the man attempted to avoid punishment and deliberately offered each of the police officers a bribe of 200 euros — a total of 400 euros.
Despite repeated warnings from the police officers that offering a bribe is punishable by law, the driver continued to insist on his proposal, hoping that the offense would not be recorded.
After this, the man was detained and placed in a temporary detention center.
Two criminal cases have been initiated regarding the incident:
🔹 The first — for driving a vehicle while in a state of severe alcohol intoxication, when the alcohol concentration exceeds 1.5 promille.
🔹 The second — for giving or offering a bribe to an official in order to influence the performance of official duties.
According to the Criminal Code, driving under severe alcohol intoxication is punishable by imprisonment for up to one year, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, as well as a five-year driving ban.
For attempting to bribe a public official, the offender may face imprisonment for up to five years, community service, a fine, short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision.
