In Latgale, migrant transporters have become active in spring

In the spring, migrant transporters have become active in the border regions of Latgale. Border guards have already detained more than 10 people who were trying to profit from this.

On average, 4-6 people are transported in one vehicle; however, in one case, a minibus was detained with 20 migrants inside.

Maris Pukinskis, the deputy head of the Daugavpils office of the State Border Guard (SBG), reported that this year, as the flow of migrants has become active again, 12 transporters have already been detained. Seven criminal cases have been initiated against transporters in Daugavpils, and five in the Ludza office of the SBG, but punishment does not deter transporters from this trade. "It is even sadder that many transporters do not realize the consequences of such crimes - only later in conversation does it become clear that people were unaware of the responsibility," noted Pukinskis.

The transportation of migrants is carefully planned - routes are studied, and further transportation is organized. Each driver receives instructions in real-time - coordinates are sent to transporters gradually, and the destination becomes known only at the last moment. The SBG does not deny that in some cases, transporters manage to take migrants out of Latvia, but Lithuanian colleagues come to help here. "Based on the information we provide, they carry out detentions. This year, three transporters have been detained in this way," Pukinskis reported.
