The German police, during a routine road check, detained two men suspected of working for foreign entities to prepare sabotage, LETA reports citing DPA.

One of the detainees is a 45-year-old citizen of Latvia, the other is a 43-year-old citizen of Ukraine.

They were detained on April 12 on the A6 motorway near Neunetttelzau in Bavaria, the state criminal police department reported.

Authorities believe that both acted in the interests of some organization or institution located outside Germany; however, the police did not provide further details.

The prosecution suspects them of acting as agents whose task was to prepare sabotage. They also used forged identity documents.

During a search of the detainees' vehicle, police found suspicious items, including fake documents, GPS trackers, communication devices, as well as a large number of mobile phones and SIM cards.

Both men, who have permanent residency in Germany, were heading towards the border with the Czech Republic at the time of their detention.

Both detainees are in custody pending trial.
