Explosions and several burning balconies frightened the residents of Rezekne. Part of the exterior of the five-story building was engulfed in flames. Burning droplets from the fourth floor rained down, destroying two more balconies and the plantings near the house.
Three out of four balconies facing Ventspils Street were engulfed in flames, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3). Soon, the red light was replaced by the blue lights of fire trucks in the yard. Residents of house No. 22 and the surrounding area watched from outside as the "rain of fire" from the fourth floor engulfed everything below.
"At first, there was a sound like an explosion, as if the slate had cracked. I looked out the kitchen window and saw that the balconies were on fire. So, we immediately went outside — you never know what might happen, there is gas in the house," said eyewitness Vyacheslav.
"As far as I understood from the version that was discussed yesterday, there was some flammable substance on the fourth floor, either acetone or something else, because all the doors are soaked with it, and the smell still lingers. (DP: Was there some liquid there?) Yes, even a bush burned. Burning droplets started dripping from the fourth floor. The third floor suffered the most," Vyacheslav continued.
The "Degpunktā" program managed to meet a woman whose balcony shattered, scattering shards across the yard. She explains that, fortunately, she keeps things inside, so only the window and the balcony itself were damaged, with no other losses:
"The fire was insane! I was afraid it would break the window and get into the room. But, thank God, no — only the first outer glass cracked."
The situation was worse on the second floor, as there were more items that could be destroyed by the fire. At the time of the fire, Natalia's entire family was at home:
"My son was sitting at the computer, the windows were open, the curtains were not drawn. He saw that a fire had started, called me, and together with his father, they began to extinguish it, pouring water. We put it out ourselves, and when the firefighters arrived, we had already managed to handle it."
She continues: "The children were very scared. Everything that was on the balcony — the laundry hanging — all burned. (DP: What did you have there?) Clothes, well, the clothes were hanging. Everything started falling down on us, and our balcony caught fire. (DP: Do you know what that liquid was?) It smelled like diesel, a diesel-like smell."
The "Degpunktā" program asked a resident of the fourth-floor apartment about the cause of the fire, but the woman explained that she felt very unwell and was not ready to talk.
However, neighbor Natalia heard the owner's version of the cause of the fire: "The owner, where it all started, says that some canister exploded. But you know, if a canister had exploded, three floors wouldn't have been affected. Something was leaking. There was really some liquid. (DP: Was there a lot of it?) Yes, a lot.
