In the past 24 hours, the State Border Guard prevented 103 illegal migrants from attempting to cross the Belarusian-Latvian border, the LETA agency was informed by the border guard.
This year, attempts to illegally cross the state border by 1,200 individuals have been thwarted.
The government has extended the enhanced border security regime at the Latvian-Belarusian border until June 30 of this year. This measure was introduced due to the increased flow of illegal migrants organized by Belarus. The enhanced control regime is in effect in Ludza and the municipalities of Ludza County, in Kraslava and its municipalities, in Augšdaugava County, in Daugavpils, as well as in the Kaunata municipality of Rēzekne County.
Last year, the State Border Guard prevented a total of 12,046 attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border. For humanitarian reasons, crossing the border was not prohibited for 31 illegal migrants last year. In 2024, 5,388 individuals were deterred from illegally crossing the border, while for humanitarian reasons, 26 individuals were admitted into the country.
