On Thursday, border guards detained a foreign citizen in the Ludza region for transporting 21 illegal migrants who had crossed the state border illegally, reported the State Border Guard (GPO).
During an operational information check, border guards stopped a Volkswagen minibus in the Istra municipality.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, it was found that there were 21 individuals of Asian descent inside the cabin without valid travel documents, visas, and residence permits for Latvia.
A criminal case has been initiated against the transporter for the illegal movement of persons across the state border. All illegal migrants were returned to the border with Belarus.
As reported, this week, GPO officers, together with the State Police, detained two Latvian citizens and one Moldovan citizen for transporting illegal migrants.
Ten individuals of Asian descent without valid travel documents, visas, and residence permits for Latvia were hiding in their vehicle.
Eight individuals were returned to the border with Belarus, while two required medical assistance, so they were taken to a medical facility.
