The girls' football tournament for 14-15 year olds, Tallinn Girls Cup, which was supposed to take place in the Estonian capital at the end of June, has been canceled as some foreign teams withdrew from participation, citing the geopolitical situation.
Several European clubs had already registered for the competition. Additionally, clubs from Singapore and Dubai were considering the possibility of coming to Estonia.
However, on Wednesday, it was announced that the tournament was canceled. Organizer Innar Hunt told ERR News that some teams had withdrawn from participation. Hunt did not disclose which specific countries' clubs had withdrawn but noted that one German club asked him, "How bad is the situation with Russia?"
The organizer pointed out that parents in other countries (even in neighboring Sweden) might have developed an acute sense of danger due to media reports about the worsening international situation. In particular, news from Estonia about several drones entering its territory made it into the foreign press.
"Teams received questions from concerned parents. We were told that the decision was not easy, but the reasons were growing uncertainty and concerns for the girls' safety," added Hunt.
