A man arrested in Daugavpils for the murder of his mother and burying her in the forest

A man has been arrested in Daugavpils this week on suspicion of murdering his mother and burying her body in the forest, the State Police informed the LETA agency.

On April 11, the municipal police of Daugavpils, checking information about a missing woman born in 1973, arrived at her residence. The woman was not found at the specified address.

At the same time, the behavior of the woman's son drew the officers' attention, raising suspicions, which were reported to the State Police. Their officers arrived at the scene and took over further procedural actions.

During a thorough examination of the crime scene, law enforcement discovered traces of blood in the residence, on an axe, and on a wheelbarrow. A place for a bonfire was also found on the property, where the woman's clothing had been burned.

During a conversation with the police, the man born in 1996 repeatedly changed his statements about the whereabouts of his mother. Based on the suspicions that arose, he was detained at the scene.

Continuing the investigation and working with the suspected perpetrator, the man confessed that on April 7, he struck his mother several times with an axe and then buried her body in a nearby forest area.

Search dogs from the State Police were involved in the search for the body. In the forest, the buried body of the woman was found, wrapped in a tent. Chop and blunt force injuries were discovered on her head and the back of her neck.

Law enforcement continues the investigation and is establishing the motive for the crime.

Employees of the Southern Latgale Investigation Department of the Latgale Regional Administration of the State Police petitioned the court for the application of a measure of restraint related to deprivation of liberty for the man. On April 13, a measure of restraint was chosen — arrest.

In connection with this crime, a criminal process has been initiated under Article 116 of the Criminal Law — for the intentional unlawful deprivation of another person's life. Such a crime is punishable by life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of five to 20 years with subsequent probation supervision for up to three years.
