Last weekend, rescuers rushed to a two-story house on Seminara Street in Valka, where a fire occurred at the door of one of the apartments.
Fortunately, no one was injured, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
Behind this seemingly minor fire lies a serious and hostile conflict — as the apartment owner recounted, the fire was set intentionally, and the culprit then fled to Estonia.
When asked who set fire to the apartment door, the woman had no doubts — her ex-husband, who had recently been released from prison, is the main suspect.
"There is such a probability, the police said it was my ex-husband. He got out of prison and did this. I feel that way myself. He is aggressive," the woman said.
Several years ago, when the couple separated, the man likely still had feelings. He expressed them through prolonged stalking — breaking windows of neighbors, forcing his way into the woman's door, and a day before the fire, something was also thrown into her window.
The woman did not let him in and feared for her safety, so the day before, she went to stay somewhere else. At four in the morning, a neighbor called her — the entrance was engulfed in flames. Seven residents were forced to evacuate, but fortunately, no one was injured.
In recent days, the ex-husband, like a shadow of violence, did not give the woman peace: "He was in prison for drugs, for driving under the influence. I didn't sleep all night today."
As neighbors later reported, after setting fire to the door, the man ran out of the house and covered a short distance — about 20 meters — to the border with Estonia, which he crossed. The further actions are now in the hands of both the Latvian police and the law enforcement agencies of the neighboring country.
The suspected cause of the fire is arson. The day before, a window in the same apartment was intentionally damaged and broken, the police reported.
A criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident. Currently, there is one person of interest residing in Estonia who is wanted. The police continue to investigate the circumstances of what happened.
