In the past 24 hours, every second fire in Latvia was related to the burning of dry grass, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) reported to the LETA agency.
Firefighters received a total of 72 calls, of which 42 were for extinguishing fires, with dry grass burning in 24 cases.
The largest dry grass fires were recorded in several regions. In Ludza, grass burned over an area of five hectares, in the Trapene parish of the Smiltene region — over an area of 3.1 hectares, and in the Ezernieki parish of the Kraslava region, where hay bales also burned, — over an area of three hectares.
Fires of dry grass covering two hectares were extinguished in the Viksne parish of the Balvi region, the Pādurde parish of the Kuldīga region, and in the Purene parish of the Ludza region, where the fire also affected an outbuilding.
The State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) reminds that burning dry grass is prohibited and urges residents not to risk their safety and that of others. In case of fire, it is necessary to call 112 immediately.
Firefighters also responded to other calls. On Friday, due to a fire in the basement of a four-story public building on Ganibu Street in Liepaja, 229 people were evacuated. In Riga, on Murjāņu Street, one victim was rescued from a smoke-filled apartment.
Last night at 4:18, firefighters were dispatched to Seminar Street in Valka, where the entrance doors of an apartment in a two-story residential building were burning over an area of two square meters. Seven people were evacuated from the building, and the fire was extinguished at 5:11.
At 6:00, a call came in from the Garkalne parish of the Ropaži region, where a boiler room and household items were burning in the basement of a three-story residential building over an area of 90 square meters. Before the firefighters arrived, two people evacuated from the building, and rescuers also carried out two cats from the house. The fire was localized at 7:31, and work at the scene continues.
