Tragic Fire in Kengarags: Apartment Owner Tried to Save the Situation but Ended Up in Intensive Care

Over the weekend in Riga, in Kengarags, several dozen square meters were burned in one of the apartments. The fire started on a closed balcony but quickly spread to other rooms. The owner tried to deal with the fire but was injured and is now in intensive care.

Feeling an unpleasant smell in the apartment, the neighbor from above was the first to raise the alarm, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3). Together with other residents, she searched for the source until she noticed black smoke coming from the windows of the apartment on the seventh floor. After that, they called the firefighters, and those who had the owner's contact information tried to reach him as well.

"I called him and asked what happened. He was at home, possibly with friends. As far as I understand, it all started on the balcony — perhaps they were smoking there. When the firefighters arrived and opened the door, smoke was already coming from the kitchen. The apartment owner was sleeping at that moment but woke up, ran out onto the balcony, and tried to throw out burning items. That is likely where the fire started. He suffered burns to his hands and legs and was taken to the hospital," says the upstairs neighbor Oleg.

According to relatives, while trying to extinguish the fire himself, the man also inhaled smoke. They are currently cleaning the burned and charred apartment: "It’s okay, a fire happened, but even we can’t understand why. You see, it caught fire on the balcony; there was nothing like that there. We can’t ask him anything because he is currently in intensive care."

In total, about 15 square meters of the premises were burned.
