The Vilnius police have launched a pilot project in which drones respond to certain incidents instead of sending patrols directly to the scene, LRT.
The Chief Commissioner of Police Arūnas Paulauskas stated on Monday that the project is being tested in collaboration with city authorities.
"We are exploring the possibility of responding to certain incidents using drones. The drone flies to the scene, officers see a live stream and the real situation, and often patrols do not even need to go out," said Paulauskas at a press conference.
According to him, currently four drones are being tested as part of the system.
The Chief Commissioner noted that the system can be expanded, as in many cases, the physical presence of police officers is not necessary.
For example, in the case of minor traffic accidents where no one is injured, the drone can capture the position of vehicles, allowing drivers to fill out accident declarations without waiting for the police.
Drones can also be used to respond to other incidents, such as blocked passages, obstructed vehicles, and similar situations, he said.
Equipped with thermal imaging cameras, drones can also be effective for apprehending thieves.
