Youth Planned a Masquerade for Valentine's Day in a 'Abandoned' Building in Jurmala, but the Police Found Out

February 14, or Valentine's Day, is a holiday of love. The youth of Jurmala wanted to celebrate it grandly in a place where it is prohibited.

A group of young people chose an abandoned sanatorium on Dzintaru Avenue as an excellent place for a masquerade, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3). The celebration was planned for the evening of Valentine's Day. There is no public information about the event, but one honorary guest is known — the Jurmala municipal police received an invitation to attend the event.

Jurmalas municipal police representative Derian Bartulis ironically noted:

“In the middle of the week, we received an informal invitation to a Valentine's Day event that the youth wants to hold in an abandoned building. We will definitely participate and be here. In our opinion, Valentine's Day should be celebrated in safe conditions with your significant others, rather than risking your own and others' health and even lives.”

Since 2023, the building has had the status of an object that deteriorates the urban environment and poses a threat to life. Such abandoned buildings often become a favorite spot for hooligans and the homeless, and recently there has been a trend among youth to spend time in deserted buildings.

Law enforcement officials explain that this address did not have such a reputation previously, and usually, people do not enter without permission. However, apparently, the organizers wanted to popularize it. To prevent this, the police appealed on social media, urging youth to find an alternative location for the celebration. Apparently, this worked — the organizers saw the post and moved the party to another location.

“According to unofficial information, we know that this event has already been moved to Riga. Therefore, we urge the Riga municipal police, upon noticing similar actions, to act similarly to us, protecting society, youth, and everyone in general,” said the police officer.

The new venue in the capital is still unknown. However, Jurmala police officers will still be on duty in the area on Saturday, and Riga police patrols will likely monitor the most well-known abandoned buildings among youth in the city. The Degpunktā show urges celebrating the holiday of love in health-safe premises and conditions.
