Last year, 423 people were detained for illegally crossing the border of Latvia, which is 211 more offenders than the previous year, according to the State Border Guard (SBG).
Most of the offenders were detained for illegally crossing the so-called green border, while others attempted to enter the country with fake entry documents.
Last year, 1,473 asylum requests were registered, which is 434 more than in 2024. 2,952 third-country nationals were denied entry, which is slightly less than the previous year.
As previously reported, the government extended the enhanced security regime at the Latvian-Belarusian border until June 30 of this year. The enhanced regime is in effect in Ludza and the municipalities of Ludza district, Kraslava and the municipalities of Kraslava district, Augšdaugava district, Daugavpils, and Kaunata municipality of Rezekne district.
Last year, the State Border Guard (SBG) prevented 12,046 attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border. For humanitarian reasons, Latvia accepted 31 illegal migrants. In 2024, there were 5,388 attempts to illegally enter the country, and for humanitarian reasons, 26 people were accepted.
