The driver crashed his car into the concrete of the tunnel near 'Origo' while pedestrians were nearby

In conditions where every minute counts in the center of Riga to overcome traffic jams as quickly as possible, the driver's unfortunate maneuver in the Audi further slowed down the already dense traffic. The car driven by a man crashed into the concrete barrier, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).

An Audi crashed into the concrete wall of the underground tunnel right across from the 'Origo' shopping center. It is still unknown why the driver made the mistake and from which side he entered, reports TV3.

The incident surprised those who were climbing the stairs of the pedestrian tunnel at that moment — the crash echoed literally above their heads.

"I wanted to enter the tunnel and saw the car just crash into the barriers. There was one person in the car. (Degpunktā: Did he get out of the car?) Yes, there were only small clouds of smoke. (…) He immediately called the police, and then he was inspecting something in the car," said a witness.

When the emergency medical service arrived, the driver was under their observation. The impact was strong, and the car's body was severely deformed.

Firefighters moved the car aside to minimize its obstruction to traffic on the already congested streets and also cleared the roadway. Various fluids spilled on the road were collected using an absorbent.
