On Thursday morning, traffic was particularly difficult for drivers traveling on Slokas Street towards Imanta. One of the lanes was blocked by several wrecked cars, and a tram that was also involved in the accident was stopped on the tracks for half an hour. The cause of the incident was inattention — one of the drivers did not notice that a tram was approaching from the right.
A driver of a Toyota named Janis, heading towards Imanta, was stuck in traffic on Slokas Street when his car was suddenly hit from behind. The chain collision involved four vehicles — three cars and a tram, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
"The Lexus coming from Baldones Street did not notice the tram," says Toyota driver Janis.
The Lexus was the most damaged, having been struck by both the tram and a car. Its body was severely damaged, and several windows were shattered. The Mitsubishi had scratches all along the driver's side, while the front end hit the Toyota.
For a time, traffic towards Dzirciems was halted while public transport was removed and the tram tracks were cleared.
"When the tram was traveling along Slokas Street, suddenly, while turning left from Baldones Street, a car came out in front of it, which caused the collision. As a result of this incident, tram traffic was delayed for half an hour," clarified Rīgas Satiksme representative Baiba Bartashevicha-Feldmane.
The emotional shock for the drivers and passengers was significant. Fortunately, none of them required medical assistance after the incident — no physical injuries were reported.
