On Tuesday, the new Liepaja prison complex began operations, the Ministry of Justice reported. Throughout the day, all inmates of the former Liepaja prison were transferred to the new facilities. Their number is not disclosed.
Accordingly, the old Liepaja prison is closed. In the future, the facility may be offered for transfer to the local government, and if that fails, the old Liepaja prison may be put up for auction.
It was previously reported that the new prison is intended exclusively for men and for inmates from Kurzeme, Zemgale, and Latgale.
The new Liepaja prison complex is designed to accommodate 1,200 beds.
The contract for the construction of the prison was signed for a total amount of 125.9 million euros excluding value-added tax. Thus, the cost for one inmate was approximately 100,000 euros.
The entire complex will consist of six different buildings. The total area of the territory is 305,116 square meters, and the planned total area of the premises is about 37,400 square meters.
After the opening and commencement of operations of the new Liepaja prison complex, the closure of the Jelgava prison and the branch of the Griva Daugavgriva prison may also be possible.
