One of the men detained last year and now accused of espionage in favor of Russia worked as an electrician, the LETA agency has found out.
The prosecutor's office informed the LETA agency that charges have currently been filed in the case and have been handed to the accused.
The prosecutor's office confirmed that the accused worked as an electrician and is between 25 and 30 years old. The man is unmarried.
Currently, the prosecutor's office is not providing further details about the charges as they are classified. At the same time, the prosecutor's office confirmed that the actions of the accused were ideologically motivated.
As previously reported, the State Security Service (SSS), which forwarded the case to the prosecutor's office, indicated in a recent press release that criminal proceedings against this individual were initiated on October 14, 2025, based on information provided by the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIBS).
During the investigation, it was established that the Latvian citizen collected and transmitted information to the Russian military intelligence (GRU) about private infrastructure in Latvia that could be used in aviation, such as the Spilve airfield, the presence of NATO allied forces in the country, and various current issues in the defense sector. He also provided the GRU with information about public sentiment in Latvia, the support being given to Ukraine, and critical infrastructure facilities in Latvia.
Additionally, at the request of the Russian intelligence service, the man collected practical information, such as the conditions for purchasing prepaid mobile SIM cards in Latvia—whether they could be bought without revealing one's identity.
During the investigation, the SSS established that the individual maintained a covert connection with an officer of the Russian GRU and transmitted the collected information to him during meetings in Russia.
The SSS, in cooperation with the MIBS, detained the suspect on the night of October 18, 2025. He has been placed under arrest as a preventive measure.
