Due to severe frost, water pipes are bursting: 17 houses in Riga are left without water

With the onset of frost, the number of water supply emergencies in Riga has increased, reported the local water utility "Rīgas ūdens."

Currently, the biggest problem is the freezing of the ground — the roadway has frozen in places to a depth of up to one meter.

For this reason, the elimination of the water supply emergency at 18 Dzirnavu Street is complicated, which has led to the cessation of water supply to 13 residential houses.

The emergency was reported on January 19 around 18:00, and its resolution is expected only this evening.

The work on Bauskas Street is also complicated, where there is a significant water leak and ice formation, which has necessitated the disconnection of water supply to houses at 102, 104, 104A, and 93 Bauskas Street.

The company will only begin addressing this emergency tonight. During the emergency work in the morning, there may be traffic restrictions at the nearby intersection.

As explained by the company, the main causes of water supply emergencies are the so-called "ground movement," which occurs during severe frosts and thaws. It is also common for the small-diameter water supply lines to houses, where the water flow is less, to freeze.

Currently, three to four water supply emergencies are recorded daily. Last week, a total of 24 emergencies were recorded, while on average, about 1.15 emergencies are registered per day over the year.

These days, up to seven crews, including external contractors, are working simultaneously at the sites. Work is also being carried out at night.
