From $4 to $17 billion: Experts estimate cryptocurrency stolen in 2025

Due to hacks and fraud involving cryptocurrencies, over $4 billion was lost in 2025, according to the cybersecurity company PeckShield.

The estimate is based solely on officially confirmed and recorded cases and amounts of damage. For example, experts from the company Chainalysis estimate the damage for last year to be much higher — $17 billion — by analyzing the connections and transactions in wallets associated with crypto fraudsters worldwide.

According to calculations by PeckShield, the total damage in 2025 exceeded $4.04 billion. Of this, $2.67 billion was due to losses from hacks (a 24% year-on-year increase) and $1.37 billion was attributed to fraud cases (a 64% increase).

Thus, 66% of the total damage was due to hacks, the most significant being the theft of $1.4 billion from the Bybit exchange in February of last year. Another 22% of the losses were due to scams, including pseudo-investments and "rug pulls" (when the creator of a token withdraws liquidity at the peak of the price).

The report emphasizes that there is a noticeable increase in thefts that utilize social engineering methods (12% of losses in 2025).

Over the year, only about $335 million of the stolen funds were frozen or returned. PeckShield noted a decrease compared to 2024, when $488.5 million was successfully returned.
