The Security Police (SP) proposed to the prosecutor's office to initiate criminal proceedings against a Latvian citizen for the illegal collection of information about Latvian military facilities, including weapon depots, on behalf of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Russia (GRU), the agency LETA was informed by the service.
As previously reported, the suspect was detained by the Security Police (SP) on August 27 of last year. A criminal case against him was initiated on August 21 under the article of the Criminal Law on espionage.
During the investigation, the SP established several episodes of obtaining and transmitting intelligence information on behalf of the GRU. The service found that the man provided the Russian intelligence with information about the location, layout, and security measures of various military facilities in Latvia. Among them were weapon depots.
The SP investigation also revealed that the suspect provided the Russian intelligence with information about the construction of new military facilities, training of military personnel, as well as the presence of military forces from other NATO countries at specific military sites in Latvia.
According to the information available to the SP, the man transmitted other information to the Russian intelligence that could be used against the security interests of Latvia and other countries in the Baltic region.
During the investigation, the SP established that the suspect's intelligence activities were coordinated using the online messaging application "Telegram." This same application was used to transmit intelligence information to the Russian special service.
As a preventive measure, the suspect has been placed in custody.
It was previously reported that the SP conducted procedural actions at four locations in Riga and its surroundings related to this individual.
The suspect was not a public official.
