The vessel in the Liepaja port is not linked to the cable damage - police

Data from the State Police currently does not indicate that the vessel in the Liepaja port is linked to the damage of the optical cable in the Baltic Sea.

According to the State Police's public relations department, the police concluded their work on a vessel suspected of possibly damaging a cable yesterday evening.

During procedural actions, the police inspected the vessel and the anchor, examined the technical equipment and logs, and also interrogated several individuals. The crew of the vessel cooperated with the police, voluntarily providing all necessary information for the investigation.

Currently, the information obtained does not provide grounds to believe that this vessel is involved in the damage to the optical cable. The investigation is ongoing, including clarifying the circumstances under which the cable was damaged.

In the interests of the investigation, the police did not provide further comments.

As reported, last week an optical cable Palanga (Šventoji) - Liepaja was damaged near Liepaja.

The report of the damage to the cable, owned by a private company, came from Lithuania. The incident occurred in the territorial waters of Latvia on January 2.

The cable belongs to the telecommunications operator "Arelion," which is owned by the Swedish pension fund "Polhem Infra." The company also owns the cable connecting Šventoji to the Swedish island of Gotland, which was damaged in the spring of 2025.
