Two people died in a gas explosion on Bauskas Street in the Riga district of Torņakalns, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) reported to the LETA agency.

Initially, one fatality and several injuries were reported.

Today, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) informs that two people died as a result of the explosion, and two others were injured. During the rescue operations, one firefighter was also injured and was taken to a medical facility. One of the deceased was an employee of the emergency service of JSC "Gaso," who arrived at the scene due to a suspected gas leak.

Before the arrival of the SFRS, 35 people evacuated the building on their own, and another 11 were evacuated by rescuers.

During the incident, three people and six cats were rescued.

Firefighters continue to work at the scene. An operational headquarters established the day before is also in operation.

Yesterday, a crane was used to remove 13 concrete panels. Work to dismantle dangerous structures continued throughout the night.

Currently, the dismantling has been completed, and a building inspector is expected to arrive at the scene to inspect the damaged part of the building.

The circumstances of the incident are also being investigated by the State Police.

As previously reported by LETA, the operation of the building affected by the explosion is prohibited until a conclusion is received from a certified construction expert.

The explosion occurred in a five-story apartment building due to damage to the gas pipeline, causing the fourth and fifth floors, as well as the roof of the building, to collapse.

The building is managed by SIA "Latvijas namsaimnieks," which has 74 apartments, four of which belong to the municipality. According to unofficial information, the explosion occurred due to an illegal gas connection in one of the apartments owned by the municipality.

The State Police informed the LETA agency that a criminal process has been initiated regarding the incident on the grounds of crimes against public safety and order.
