A fire occurred at a bar in the Swiss alpine resort of Crans-Montana during New Year's celebrations on Thursday night, resulting in several dozen fatalities and around 100 injuries.

"Tragic news from Crans-Montana in Switzerland, where an explosion took lives and injured many. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," wrote former Foreign Minister Baiba Braže on social media.

"I express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the terrible tragedy in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. I wish a speedy recovery to all the injured," wrote the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs.

The explosion occurred around 01:30 local time (03:30 MSK) at the Le Constellation bar, where over 100 people were celebrating the New Year. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that, according to Swiss police, about 40 people died, reports Reuters. However, at a press conference regarding the fire, Swiss police representatives did not provide exact figures, stating that it involved several dozen fatalities.

According to authorities, about 100 people were injured, many of whom are in serious condition. The injured were hospitalized with burns. Medical services mobilized 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 150 medical personnel.

The intensive care unit of the hospital in Sion (the administrative center of the Valais canton) is completely full, and the injured are being sent to other locations, with hospitals in Lausanne, Geneva, and Zurich preparing to receive the wounded. Among the injured and deceased are many citizens of other countries.
