On Monday, the State Border Guard (SBG) prevented 13 people from illegally crossing the border between Latvia and Belarus, the SBG reported to the LETA agency.
Since the beginning of the year, a total of 12,043 people have been detained for illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border. At the same time, for humanitarian reasons, 31 illegal migrants were allowed to cross the border.
As previously reported, last year, 5,388 people were detained for illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border, while 26 individuals were admitted to the country for humanitarian reasons.
The government has extended the enhanced border security regime in the border area with Belarus until June 30 of next year. It was introduced due to the increased flow of illegal migrants initiated by Belarus. The enhanced control regime is in effect in Ludza and the municipalities of Ludza County, in Kraslava and its municipalities, in Augšdaugava County, in Daugavpils, and in the Kaunata municipality of Rezekne County.
