The structures of the second floor of the right wing of Bauska Hospital are in poor technical condition, which is why, for safety reasons, the therapy and care department has been closed, the medical institution reported.
On Monday, December 22, hospital staff identified damage to the inter-floor ceilings under the suspended ceilings – signs of damage to the load-bearing wooden beams were observed in the ceiling structure.
The hospital explains that immediate safety measures were taken to ensure stability and reduce risks. The situation was assessed as a potential pre-emergency condition, which led to the implementation of stricter safety measures.
According to the initial assessment of the situation, the identified damage is a result of prolonged wear and the consequences of previous management of the building.
The hospital decided to immediately cease operations of the therapy and care department on the second floor. Nine patients were discharged from the department, and another ten patients were transferred to other medical facilities.
At this time, the hospital will not accept new patients in the specified department until further decisions are made and a certified structural engineer's conclusion is obtained. However, the emergency medical department and patient reception at Bauska Hospital have not been halted.
A state of emergency has been declared at the hospital in accordance with the protocol outlined in the Disaster Medicine Plan. An inspection by a certified structural engineer is scheduled for December 29.
According to Firmas.lv, the turnover of the municipal company Bauskas slimnīca last year was 5.6 million euros, while the enterprise incurred losses of 52,000 euros. The hospital is managed by Margarita Epermane.
