In recent days, both in Latvia and Ghana, the story of Ghanaian exchange student Nana Agyei Ahyia has caused a wide media resonance. He died on June 2 in Riga on Baznicas Street after falling from a fifth-floor window. Nana's relatives have launched a large-scale campaign on TikTok, stating that the truth about the circumstances of the young man's death has not yet been established and the guilty party who killed him has not been found. The portal tv3.lv contacted the Riga Technical University to find out what Nana's educational process was like and whether he faced any difficulties.

The circumstances of Nana's death in Latvia are still under investigation, confirmed the State Police to the portal tv3.lv. A criminal case was initiated on June 2, 2025, regarding the death of Ghanaian citizen Nana Agyei Ahyia, who died after falling from a fifth-floor window. The incident was registered on June 2 at 2:50 AM on Baznicas Street in Riga. Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances of the death, and the criminal process is not yet completed. At the same time, no individuals have been detained during the investigation. The police indicate that no confirmed information has been received indicating the involvement of other individuals in Nana's death.

The police reported that Nana rented an apartment in Riga on Baznicas Street on the fifth floor of the building. The apartment has a total of four rooms, three of which were rented out, and one was free. As part of the criminal process, other residents were interviewed, who stated that they last saw Nana on June 1 around 11:30 PM in the kitchen, after which everyone went to their rooms.

The family is convinced – the young man was murdered

Since December, Nana's sister Abena Nadia has been actively campaigning on TikTok. She has posted dozens of videos claiming that her brother definitely did not commit suicide – he was poisoned and then killed. The sister of the deceased Ghanaian student also details in the videos the racism her brother faced in Riga and how Nana's death reflects how unsafe Latvia is for students from Africa.

"All of Africa is mourning, the family is mourning, we want a fair investigation for Nana," Abena emotionally says in the video. "You cannot poison Nana Agyei, choke him, and then expect us to move on as if nothing happened."

The sister also claims that Nana was poisoned, he felt dizzy, fell from dizziness, but no one helped him.

"How is it that you chose the version of suicide for this young man? Why are you treating him this way? Why?" the sister repeatedly asks rhetorically, convinced that her brother was both poisoned and then brutally killed.

Latvia received a note from Ghana

This case has caused a wide resonance in Ghana, media reports say. The state newspaper The Ghanaian Times published a statement from Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, December 18. Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the ministry has begun an investigation into the murder of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei in Latvia. The minister referred to a distressing video that circulated online reporting the death of the Ghanaian citizen.

According to him, Ghana's diplomatic channels have already taken steps to clarify the circumstances of the incident and to hold the competent authorities in Latvia accountable, while confirming that the investigation is ongoing and information will be provided as it becomes available. Ablakwa also emphasized that no Ghanaian citizen can be harmed anywhere in the world without holding the guilty accountable. The minister promised to seek justice in this case.

"It is worth reminding that no one can harm a Ghanaian citizen anywhere in the world and go unpunished," Minister Ablakwa wrote on social media X.

The portal tv3.lv contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia to find out if there was any official communication with Ghana regarding the student's death. Ministry representative Diana Eglite responded that the ministry had sent a response to Ghana's note in the summer, after first contacting the State Police, so the details of the response should be clarified with law enforcement. The State Police confirmed to tv3.lv that relevant information about the incident was provided to Ghana in the summer, but the content of the note is not subject to public disclosure.

The Ghanaian student did not seek help at RTU

At the Riga Technical University, where Nana was studying in the first year of electrical engineering, the portal tv3.lv was informed that the young man from Ghana studied at RTU for a very short time – about six months. At the time of the tragic incident, he was not on the territory of the RTU student campus or any other territory under the university's jurisdiction, so the university does not have information about what happened, considering personal data protection regulations.

The university confirmed that RTU expressed condolences to the family of the deceased student and provided support to the parents – in obtaining visas for their arrival in Latvia, as well as in interacting with security authorities.

Every new student starting their studies at RTU is informed about the support system at the university and the possibilities of emergency services in Latvia, explained RTU's head of external communications Dita Araya to the portal tv3.lv. Students can report their problems to the Department of International Cooperation at RTU, as well as to their academic curator and the Student Parliament. Additionally, if necessary, an international student can receive consultation from a psychologist.

"During his studies, RTU did not receive any complaints or requests for help from Nana Agyei Ahyia," Araya stated.
