During the holiday period from December 23 to January 5, the police will conduct intensified checks on the roads, the State Police informed the LETA agency.
As noted by the police, holidays are often overshadowed by tragedies. Experience from previous years shows that drivers get behind the wheel while intoxicated, leading to accidents with injuries and fatalities.
As stated on Friday to journalists by the Deputy Chief of the Main Police Department, Arturs Smilga, some pedestrians still do not use reflective gear, and this year more pedestrians have died than last year.
The police also urge the public to follow safety rules when using pyrotechnics and to purchase it only from legal stores.
Additionally, law enforcement agencies remind citizens to take care of the safety of their homes when traveling abroad during long weekends.
