The State Police could conduct explanatory work in Russian to reduce the number of fraud cases, said the Chief of the State Police, Armands Ruks, in an interview with the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama."

Commenting on the large number of victims of various types of fraud, Ruks noted that in most cases, the deceived are Russian-speaking people. This is logical, as fraudsters most often speak this language.

Although the State Police already conducts various campaigns to clarify fraud schemes and warn people not to fall for them, achieving results is not easy. Therefore, the State Police is considering the possibility of conducting explanatory work in Russian as well.

"We had a rather principled position that we do not address the Russian language, but now we see that at the expert level, it will be necessary to provide explanations in Russian," the police chief admitted.

As reported, in the last week of November, residents of Latvia lost 460,937 euros to theft, according to the LETA agency citing the State Police.

From November 24 to 30, the State Police registered 271 cases of fraud. In 71 cases, residents lost money, in 197 cases, the fraudsters' attempts did not lead to financial losses, and in three cases, the amount of damage is still unknown. The total losses for residents amount to at least 460,937 euros.

The largest sums of money continue to be extorted in cases of telephone fraud, where fraudsters impersonate employees of utility services, the State Police, mobile operators, the State Revenue Service, credit institutions, postal services, or social services. Last week, telephone fraudsters managed to extort 303,931 euros, and most of these cases were again registered in the Riga region — 189.
