From now on, the police may conduct explanatory work among the population in Russian. This was stated by the head of the State Police, Armand Ruks, on Latvian television.
According to him, speaking in Russian is necessary to prevent more people from becoming victims of fraudsters. Ruks assures that in most cases, it is Russian-speaking residents who are deceived. This, in his opinion, is logical, as fraudsters also tend to speak Russian more often.
Despite the fact that the State Police is already conducting campaigns to explain fraud schemes and warn people, achieving results is not easy. Therefore, the State Police is considering the possibility of conducting explanations in Russian as well.
Until now, according to Ruks, the police had a rather principled position that communication in Russian was not happening — but it is now clear that at the expert level, it is necessary to explain the risks in Russian as well.
Just in the last week of November, fraudsters swindled 460,000 euros from residents of Latvia. During this time, the State Police registered 271 cases of fraud.
