Last weekend, part of a residential building in Jelgava burned down. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident — the building was under renovation and had not yet been inhabited. However, the event has caused certain disagreements among local residents — some claim they noticed something was wrong as early as 2:00 AM, while the alarm to the rescuers was only made at 5:00 AM, reports the program Degpunktā (TV3).
This house was purchased exactly a year ago by a resident of Jelgava. The plot is divided into two parts, and the goal was to renovate the purchased half and turn it into a cozy home for the family.
Now all dreams are shattered — early Saturday morning, the fire spared not a single square meter: the first floor, the attic, and almost the entire roof burned down. At the scene, journalists from Degpunktā met the owner’s friend. According to her, the owner received news of the fire immediately after it was extinguished. The family is now awaiting the conclusion of experts — the building was insured.
The house had been under renovation for a long time, and fortunately, no one lived in it. However, it is particularly painful that all the work was nearly completed, and the family with two small children was set to move in next week.
"In a week. Everything was absolutely ready. The shower cabin had just been delivered — that was the last thing that needed to be installed," the owner’s friend recounts.
She is outraged by the behavior of the neighbors — it turned out that some of them saw signs of fire as early as two in the morning: "No one called [the firefighters] from 2:00 to 5:00 in the morning. No one. This is outrageous."
To find out the other side's position, Degpunktā spoke with a resident of the other part of the house. A thick wall separated her from the fire, and the only damage she suffered was a leaking ceiling from the water used to extinguish the fire. The woman described how everything looked from her side.
According to her, at 2:00 AM, smoke was coming from the chimney, but it did not seem suspicious — the man, the owner of the house, often worked on the site at late hours.
"We thought he was just heating something up," the neighbor explains.
Only at 5:00 AM, when she went out into the yard, did she realize that the neighbors had a fire, and she called the rescuers at that time. The owners managed to talk, and the woman whose part of the house was damaged was in shock from what had happened.
The friend's criticism of the neighbors may not fully reflect the feelings of the owner herself. Both sides can be understood — efforts and funds had been invested in the house over the year, and all of it turned to ashes.
However, considering the neighbors' perspective, it is difficult to objectively assess what is happening at night — especially if the house was occasionally used at night. The State Police is currently investigating the incident. The main theory among locals is that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the wiring.
