Last month, a man was detained and arrested in Latgale on suspicion of murdering his relative, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.
On November 19, officers from the South Latgale division of the State Police received information that the body of a man born in 1961 had been discovered at his private estate in the Viskyu parish of the Augšdaugava region. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene.
There were bodily injuries recorded on the body and face of the deceased. Initially, a relative of the deceased at the scene explained to the police that the man had sustained bodily injuries two days prior — allegedly as a result of an attack by unidentified individuals.
A criminal process was initiated under the article concerning the infliction of intentional serious bodily harm resulting in the death of the victim. During the pre-trial investigation, officers from the South Latgale division managed to identify a possible perpetrator. On November 21, the police arrested and placed in a temporary detention center a man born in 1987 — a relative of the deceased.
The court granted the police's request and chose arrest as a preventive measure for the man.
The police continue the investigation of the initiated criminal process and are establishing the motive for the crime.
The criminal process was initiated under the third part of Article 125 of the Criminal Law — for the intentional infliction of serious bodily harm resulting in the accidental death of the victim, or for the intentional infliction of serious bodily harm committed by an organized group. The sanctions of the article provide for imprisonment for a term of three to fifteen years with or without confiscation of property, as well as probation supervision for up to three years or without it.
